BLAZER GLORY

For work, rest or play, the blazer is one of the hardest-working staples in your wardrobe. Here, Esquire’s style director,
Teo van den Broeke, tries a few on and shares his tips on how to pull off the smart jacket with stylish aplomb

Work wonders

For decades, the unwritten sartorial rule of the office dictated that men wear suits (a few dress-down Fridays aside).Today, things have relaxed; never has it looked more stylish – or smart – to wear a tailored blazer with a pair of beautifully cut trousers in a contrasting fabric. The key is to keep colours tonal and accessories traditional: a knitted tie or folded pocket square smartens things up instantly.

Something for the weekend

While a structured blazer is perfect for formal environments, something softer like a
deconstructed jacket is great for downtime.
Team tailored separates with traditionally
sporty pieces such as sneakers, sweaters and
backpacks; this new relaxed mood is simple to
add to your wardrobe.Wear a comfortable
cotton or linen style with pieces of a similar
shade and classic tennis shoes to look
considered and understated.Just make sure
everything fits well – it’s about looking relaxed, not sloppy.

When night falls

If you’re going out at night, focus on fabric and
colour.Pep up something like a classic navy
blazer with a print shirt, or for double-breasted
styles (great for creating the illusion of height),
ensure your blazer takes centre stage with a
simple T-shirt in a luxe material.While a
deconstructed style suits daytime, a more
structured cut is better for evenings – it’ll make
you look smarter and slimmer. And who doesn’t
want that?
